TALC News

June 2008

First off: An Apology

Sorry we haven’t updated this site for so long-it’s sad and there’s no excuse. Actually there are loads of excuses but that’s not the point is it?? No. Sorry then…

WHAT THE HELL!!! THE NEW ALBUM IS DONE!!

YOU READ THAT RIGHT! IT IS DONE!

That’s enough shouting for now, the record is called “Licensed Premises Lifestyle” and it will be available to purchase in some shops/online retailers/direct from Kudos at the end of June…we’re quite pleased that it’s done and hopefully you will be pleased to listen to it. What’s it all about then?

It’s about a mythical bar called The Wonderbar where you can retreat from the everyday hum drum and meet friends, drink, and generally have a good time with like-minded red-faced people. It’s based on all of our favourite places to drink around the world with a large poetic license, like a super-boozer or some such rubbish..

At this point I don’t want to give the tracks away so suffice to stay if you liked the last album this one is far better played as we’ve recruited our favourite musicians to play on it. The Gift and myself (Dr. Fun) are still covering vocals/drums/bass/keys but we’ve enlisted some amazing soloist’s and some of the countries best players. It was so exciting! It still is! I need a lie down!

TALC news October 2006

WOO HOO! Album is shipping now-you can get it at most good independent record shops, many on-line retailers (worldwide) as well as on iTunes!

We’re quite pleased with the results and have had some fun playing a live 30 min slot on Janice Long’s show on radio 2. The reviews are pretty fine as well! Unbelievable!

www.dustygroove.com had this to say, they live in America, that’s quite far away!:

One of the grooviest little records we've heard in years -- a sweet set of modern pop numbers, all perfectly produced with plenty of warm instrumental touches -- in a style that's somewhere in the space between Prefab Sprout and Steely Dan! Talc have a definite way with a quirky tune -- choosing subject matter that others wouldn't dare touch, and somehow managing to serve it up in these clever little tunes that are never too heady, nor too full of themselves -- thanks to some 70s styled funky backdrops that feature plenty of keyboards behind the lyrics. There's a brilliance here that's hard to describe, and one that we fear may go sadly overlooked given the current climate in pop -- and it's our guess that if this one were issued back in 1985, it would have been something of a hit! Titles include "Father Tomato", "The 1970s", "Modern Sleep Over", "All At Sea", "Garden Of Dance", "Cheese Dreams", and "Dad's Tired".

Bill Brewster, him say this:

Talc are the bastard offspring of the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band and Steely Dan
caught in a love clinch at the Oasis swimming baths with Joan Collins circa
1979. They put the smile on the face of funk.

Simon Harrison had this to say:

2006 has been an amazing year for music and there has been no let-up on weekly releases since January. Trying to listen to everything is difficult due to time and if you play across the board it's hard to give each piece of music the attention it deserves. So after "Modern Sleepover", "Please Please Please Me" from the Wah Wah 45s compilation a few months ago and recently "Garden of Dance", I was ready for something special and believe me this is more than something special- it's going to be a masterpiece, if you've got your head screwed on properly. The lyrics are clever and some of the funniest you'll hear this year, certain to put a smile on your face, if not split your sides.. When was the last time you heard a band sing about being a carrot or a lobster and this is only the start. Todd Terje has been quoted saying "that he nearly wet his pants when he heard "Modern Sleepover": you've been warned.

 There’s others…..go look!

TALC news July 2006!

Well well well. After 3 years, some tears and a really good time the album “Sit Down Think” is finally done! I know! We had to whittle it down to 12 tracks of power which we have and we’re really quite excited about the whole thing. Our friends at wahwah45s have decided, in their infinite wisdom, to release it on CD as well! That means you’ll be able to buy it and play it!

If you do have a turntable you can get “Garden of Dance” here: www.kudosrecords.co.uk .Just follow the “Talc” link. It’s a disco maxi single with a new project “man/boy featuring girl” on the B side with their dance floor smash “It’s Only Perfect” that features Louise Marshall on vocals, Glen Nightingale on guitar, Julian Crampton on bass, Matt Cooper on keys, Karlos Edwards on percussion and your very own Talc lads on production and claxon. And clapping as well.

In the mean time we’re looking at an iTunes release of the album in early September-we’ll keep you posted on that one..personally I’d rather buy it, it’s just not the same without having the C.D. in your hand….and MP3s do sound different as well, just not as much air on the recording you know?

Talc News Feb 2006!

What a long time has passed since the last Talc news update…..why? Well because we’ve been really really really lazy. And the web stuff is a mystery..BUT..no more!

We have, as ever, been working on BRAND NEW TUNES for hit combo Talc, including the soon to be smash “The 1970’s” and a little ditty we call “Cheese Dreams”. It’s all about having a hot cheese sandwich before bed time and the mental carnage that happens whilst you’re sleeping.

“Modern Sleep Over” got played on BBC Radio 1 (brave…) and was one of Nik Luscombe’s records of the year on XFM. So that’s nice then..

We’ve also got one of those “myspace” thingys. You can have a gander if you fancy, it’s at www.myspace.com/talconline  Come join us if you’re on there already..

We’ll be sticking up some new tune snippets in the next couple of weeks, it only seems fair. Meanwhile get yourself down to the Cargo gig on the 24th March. Should be a blinder, we love playing there. Everyone is so so so so so so so nice. It’s to celebrate the launch of a wahwah compilation that contains our track “Please Please Please Me”. It also has a load of other top stuff on it as well.

Just to prove how busy we’ve been check out the new “in the studio” pictures on this very page. It hurts, but someone has to….

Older News

The 10” of “Modern Sleep Over/Dad’s Tired” is still available at your local independent retailer or at www.kudosrecords.co.uk So go and buy it and support our ongoing exploits.

July at the Jazz Café sees the welcome return of Food on the Bass guitar fresh from a stint in L.A. with Sir Robert Williams. You know, that pop star bloke. Anyway, he’s back in the frame now so expect a lot of staring and sushi at the next gig.

Don’t forget to send us an e-mail to join our mailing list with various prizes (ahem) good karma (cough) and a free sweet! We’ll let you know what’s going on, we need to after all.

In the mean time here’s what people have been saying about “Modern Sleep Over”

'Genius' Nick Luscombe (XFM)

'Sounds like Herbie Hancock! Could cross over big time' Gilles Peterson (Radio1)

'Superb! Real song writing, with a cool Steely Dan twist, which sounds gorgeous in my ears. 8.5/10' Mad Mats (Raw Fusion/Jugglin)

'Soft rock masterpiece 2005 style! Love this.. (CSN)

“Steely Dan and all the others; move over!' Snorre Seim (Butti 49, Exceptional Records)

We also got “record of the week” in Piccadilly Records, Mancester. Hooray!

That’s the news for now - be good to people you like and we’ll be seeing you at the Jazz Café gig on the 22 nd July. We’re on late (11:30) so be prepared for some strange goings on.

Big News in the Talc camp this week- our special new friends at www.wahwah45s.com are putting out “Modern Sleep Over” and “Dad’s Tired” on a lovely piece of fresh smelling 10” record shaped vinyl! Hooray!

After a lengthy discussion about life, pie’s and things beginning with the letter “T” it was decided that this tune would be our first release. And it doesn’t stop there! Oh no! We’re just getting started.

Meanwhile, back at Talc Towers we had some pics done. The Gift now sports city gent as well as Dr. Fun, matching clothing makes us more powerful.

Shocking Ninja based developments on the live band front as TALC welcome stealth guitar legend “Noir Le Blanche” to our midst.
The Gift and Dr.Fun caught up with Noir during a short rain storm near Melton Mowbray (where they make the pies).
THE GIFT: So Noir, how did you feel being asked to join the ranks of TALC live? A big day?
NOIR: Really a highlight. Almost too big if I’m honest, I was busy trying out new and exciting sounds in the country when Dr. Fun called me and I was so excited I caught my face in a passing farm!
DR. FUN: Ouch! Bet that stung a bit! I remember it now, you said……..hang on……no it’s gone….
THE GIFT: How do you think your first gig with the band went? We sure as hell enjoyed your finger lickin’ pickin’…
NOIR: It was very hot and my hands hurt. I can’t remember much else. People seemed pleased though! Hooray! Can I go now?
DR. FUN: Not just yet. Any plans for intricate stage craft? You were spotted at the last gig playing acoustic and electric at the same time! Can this go any further?
NOIR: Thanks for asking! I’ve just taken delivery of a Bavarian mandolin which I fabricated a chin strap for so in theory I’ll be able play acoustic, electric and the mandolin! All whilst combating wrongs in the land of harmony as a ninja….
THE GIFT: That’s just great Noir…..please be careful out there….
NOIR: Not a problem…see you soon.
DR. FUN: Bye bye Noir.
NOIR: Bye Dr. Fun
THE GIFT: See you then Noir.
NOIR: Bye bye Gift.

At last! TALC are more than a dream in the mind of a poorly child! Good things come to those who wait after all and after a hard year in the studio those TALC lads have very nearly finished the whole album. It contains tales like never before on record, all set to music! Here's a track listing so far:

  • Father Tomato
  • Modern Sleepover
  • Kings of the Road
  • Wavy Glass Land
  • Dad's Tired
  • Dancin' Laughin' Shoutin' Pointin'
  • Country Supper
  • Bobby Fame
  • All at Sea
  • Memory
  • Niteklub
  • We Are TALC

You can hear some of the tracks on the "Audio" link page. The others will just have to be in your imagination for now OR you can get yourself down to the gig at Bush Hall on the 30th March, check out the "Live" page for details....

The E.P. will be available soon as well. Exciting times indeed. A bit like christmas but without that fat bearded bloke. Then again...

Apart from sorting out stage wear and rehersing with the TALC live band the lads have been out and about in their favorite spots in deepest West London working on a huge plan for global domination. Unfortunately that seemed a bit much so they went shopping for hats then popped out for a few drinks.

Check back for more news, live pics and all that stuff. Nearly said "all that jazz" then! Phew that was close......oh bugger..
